Battlefield 6 Aims for Revolution: EA Wants a Platform, Not Just a Shooter

Everything has changed for Battlefield. EA is aiming to shake up the industry with Battlefield 6, revealing plans that go far beyond a typical video game. EA CEO Andrew Wilson says the teams aren’t building “a product”—they’re focused on creating “a platform.”

The hype machine is in full swing. Battlefield 6 has dropped its first trailer, multiplayer gameplay is set to debut on July 31, and EA is pulling out all the stops to get players excited. The publisher confirmed it won’t be raising prices for its games (including this new shooter) and hinted at an October 10 release date. While a lot about the new Battlefield remains under wraps, one thing is clear: EA’s vision is to create not just another title, but an entire platform.

That’s according to CEO Andrew Wilson, who told investors at a recent meeting (via VGC), “We’ve been investing more in this Battlefield than any previous Battlefield product.” He went on, “The big reason for that is that this isn’t just a product. We’re really building Battlefield as a platform.” Wilson promised more details soon and said the true nature of the company’s multi-year, multi-studio investment will become clear at launch.

On the marketing front, Wilson added, “As a company, we’re all in on it. You might’ve seen the trailer last week—it was received really well. But it’s just the announcement trailer. Most of our players are waiting for the big multiplayer reveal in a couple of days [July 31].”

Battlefield 6: Designed With Gamers at Its Core

Wilson pointed out that journalists and influencers from around the world are gearing up to try Battlefield 6 firsthand in cities like Los Angeles. “We’re really excited, because beyond what players have already seen through Battlefield Labs—a new way for us to involve the community in development—this will be the first real look at the massive scale we’ve been building and a taste of what’s coming next.”

EA clearly wants to reclaim Battlefield’s spot atop the shooter charts. We’ll have to wait until the full launch to see if they deliver, but tomorrow’s multiplayer demo (July 31) should give fans plenty to talk about.
