He believes it’s better to rely on these than to read articles in foreign publications to understand the impact.
Gabe Newell, Valve’s co-founder, recently sat down with Zalkar Saliev for an interview that’s been dissected for days. Newell was asked about AI—one of the most influential, disruptive forces in tech today. He frequently used the word “value,” which here means being practical: it’s not about knowing a technology exists, but about jumping in, using it, and learning its boundaries.
“If you’re a filmmaker and you don’t understand how to use AI, you’re going to struggle in the not-too-distant future. Filmmakers using AI will think, ‘I could create a simple model for a narrow problem and know its strengths and limitations. I know I can’t solve a technical problem without a foundation model.’ I believe AI will have a ten times greater impact than CGI has had on filmmaking. In terms of the value of what you can accomplish with these technologies and the direction of your career in film, multiply that by ten.”
“If you use tools, this will help you understand their capabilities. Meanwhile, others are reading Variety articles to understand what the impact will be. Meanwhile, some 19-year-old kid in their bedroom says, ‘You don’t get this. I use the tool. Unless you’re a regular user and you see how it evolves, you’re going to miss out on opportunities.’ The more that person tries to write code or dive into research papers on the topic, the more it will accelerate the process,” Newell said.
Newell is positive about AI—and it’s no surprise. He loves new tech, has constantly pushed Valve to experiment, and is the co-founder of Starfish Neuroscience, a company focused on neural interfaces. His optimism is hardly shocking.
