MOVIE NEWS – The chilling thriller Weapons, already hailed as one of 2025’s most celebrated horror releases, has just hit theaters, yet whispers of a potential sequel are already making the rounds. Director Zach Cregger, known for his breakout 2022 hit Barbarian, revealed he has a fresh concept set within the same unsettling universe. Still, audiences shouldn’t hold their breath — he made it clear that returning to this world won’t happen immediately.
In his much-anticipated follow-up to Barbarian, Cregger once again dives into suburbia’s darker underbelly, crafting a tense mystery about an entire class of children vanishing simultaneously one night. Though the film digs deep into the enigma, it leaves just enough ambiguity to spark questions about whether the nightmare is truly over. Speaking to Variety about the possibility of a continuation, Cregger admitted: “It’s funny you asked that. I can’t help it: I have another idea for something in this world that I’m kind of excited about. I’m not going to do it next, and I probably won’t do it after my next movie, but I do have one, and I’d like to see it on the screen one day.”
Anticipation for Weapons surged in the weeks before its release, thanks to a sharp viral marketing push, cryptic teasers, and a powerhouse cast featuring Julia Garner and Josh Brolin. Critics have been quick to praise the film, with its 96% Rotten Tomatoes score cementing its place among the year’s best-reviewed horror titles. Some even suggest it solidifies Cregger’s reputation as a modern master of the genre. If box office numbers mirror its critical reception, the odds of a sequel being officially greenlit will only improve.
What’s Next for Zach Cregger?
Before revisiting the world of Weapons, Cregger has an ambitious slate ahead. Leading the list is a new live-action adaptation of Resident Evil, scheduled for release on September 18, 2026. His aim is to restore the franchise’s survival-horror essence, crafting a film that “feels authentic to the experience you get when you play the games.” Fans can expect a more tension-driven and atmospheric approach rather than the action-heavy tone of recent adaptations.
Beyond that, Cregger is developing an original sci-fi feature and has completed a script for a DC Universe film — one he describes as “not a superhero movie”. While the project hasn’t yet been greenlit by DC Studios co-chairs James Gunn and Peter Safran, they’re aware of his interest. With the success of both Barbarian and Weapons, Cregger’s name is now high on Hollywood’s watchlist, potentially setting the stage for even bigger projects ahead.
