Could Jack Sparrow Return? Pirates of the Caribbean Producer Still Won’t Give Up on Johnny Depp

MOVIE NEWS – Jerry Bruckheimer has once again declared his wish to bring Johnny Depp back as Jack Sparrow, but there’s still no tangible progress. While the actor once firmly stated he would never work with Disney again, the veteran producer remains convinced that the right script could change his mind.

As autumn approaches, Disney still hasn’t officially confirmed production of a new Pirates of the Caribbean film. From time to time, reports surface that reviving the franchise remains a top priority for the House of Mouse, and whenever that happens, lead producer Jerry Bruckheimer is quick to express confidence in Johnny Depp’s return as Captain Jack Sparrow.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Bruckheimer reiterated his belief that if Depp liked the script and the way the character was written, he would agree to return. “If he likes how the character is written, I think he would do it. It all depends on what’s on the page, as we all know,” he said, without elaborating further.

This isn’t the first, nor will it likely be the last time, Bruckheimer has voiced hope for reconciliation. Disney’s decision to put its high-profile reboot plans on hold suggests a potential change in direction, one that might open the door for Depp’s return. Still, there’s not a single Pirates of the Caribbean film currently on Disney’s horizon, which is crowded with Star Wars projects, live-action remakes of animated classics, and blockbuster installments from Marvel Studios’ ever-expanding MCU.

Reliable sources claim multiple Pirates of the Caribbean projects are in development, but their status and details remain unclear. In 2024, Bruckheimer himself mentioned a reboot penned by Jeff Nathanson (Mufasa: The Lion King) and a spin-off starring Margot Robbie with a script by Christina Hodson, whom the actress worked with on Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey.

That was in 2024, and in the movie business, a year can be both too short to bring an idea to life and long enough to explore new options. Meanwhile, Johnny Depp is engaged in completely different projects, and fans can content themselves with shows like Nautilus, recently released on streaming, which blends adventure and humor with ease.
