MOVIE NEWS – Kadokawa Corporation, Crunchyroll, Qzil.la, and Arch are collaborating on an adaptation of FromSoftware’s game Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, titled Sekiro: No Defeat.
The setting is the Sengoku period. Japan is divided into many independent nations embroiled in constant warfare. At the center lies Ashina, a land of sacred earth and ancient mystery. Twenty years after Sword Saint Isshin Ashina reclaimed the region in a brutal coup, a new threat emerges from within: the Interior Ministry. Desperate to protect his homeland, Isshin’s grandson, Genichiro, turns to forbidden powers. Their only hope lies with a kidnapped boy, the Divine Heir, and his silent protector, a loyal shinobi known only as Sekiro. This is the story of a lord and his retainer — and their quest to restore balance to a nation on the brink of collapse.
“We are taking on the monumental task of bringing the breathtakingly beautiful Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice to life. In doing so, we are pouring every ounce of our artistic vision and passion for beauty into its production. The final product is being crafted to be a memorable experience that will leave a lasting impression on dedicated fans of the game and on newcomers to the world of Sekiro. Please look forward to it,” said adaptation director Kenichi Kutsuna. “Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is a game known for its precision and intensity, and those qualities carry through beautifully in this adaptation. We’re excited to bring Sekiro: No Defeat to fans around the world and are honored to work alongside Kadokawa, Qzil.la, and Arch to expand this iconic story through anime,” added Crunchyroll Chief Content Officer Asa Suehira.
Kenichi Kutsuna will direct, Takuya Satou will write the screenplay, Takahiro Kishida will design the characters, and Kaito Moki will serve as chief animation director. One thing is certain: it is no coincidence that Crunchyroll is among the companies involved in the project.
Sekiro: No Defeat will be available worldwide (excluding Japan, China, Russia, and Belarus) on Crunchyroll, though the release date is still unknown.
