Hideo Kojima seems ready to finally hang up his cape—not as a creator, but with his most personal saga. The Japanese visionary believes that Death Stranding 2: On the Beach is the natural conclusion to both stories, and if there were ever a third entry, he would not be the one directing it.
Fans have long speculated about Kojima’s next steps after Death Stranding, but few imagined a direct sequel after his dramatic split from Konami. Sam’s strange odyssey through a fragmented world expanded last June with Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, to be followed by OD and Phsynt. Having turned the bizarre concept of “connecting civilization” into gold once again, the obvious question arose: would a third chapter make sense? Kojima doesn’t seem to think so.
Speaking to PlayStation Arabia (translated by Genki_JPN), Kojima admitted he has no plans to take a direct role in another installment, as he feels the second game’s finale marks the natural conclusion of both narratives. For him, this is a deeply personal story, shaped by difficult moments in his recent life.
If There’s a Sequel, Someone Else Will Lead
Despite stepping back, Kojima confirmed he has already drafted the narrative concept for Death Stranding 3, envisioning another member of his studio directing it in the future. This reflects his crowded schedule, with multiple projects underway at Kojima Productions. Yet the idea of anyone else steering such an iconic series is as intriguing as it is uncertain, with any follow-up still years away.
Kojima also emphasized he will remain an active creator as long as he lives. Although many of his age would consider retirement, he insists he has no such intentions. Instead, his passion for surprising fans with new experiences keeps him pushing forward.
Interestingly, over 79% of players who finished Death Stranding 2: On the Beach have continued with its post-game content. For Kojima, this highlights the powerful emotional bond the series has forged. On social media, he reminded fans: “Even in the hardest times, there is always someone willing to risk their life to protect you; even if you don’t realize it, someone is connected to you, watching over you.”
