Dune Awakening: How Long Will We Have to Wait to Explore Arrakis on Consoles?

Funcom’s title is currently only available on PC, but the developers haven’t forgotten about Sony and Microsoft’s current-generation consoles – they just need time to get it running properly on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series.

During Gamescom, WCCFTech interviewed Joel Bylos, director of Dune Awakening, to talk about the PC launch and upcoming updates for the survival sandbox MMO. Among the topics discussed was the state of the long-awaited console versions. According to Bylos, the game is scheduled to arrive on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series next year, with internal estimates pointing to a release window roughly a year from now. This suggests that Dune Awakening could land on consoles in the summer of 2026. As for cross-play, Funcom would like to implement it, though no decision has been made yet.

“We’re working toward a console launch sometime next year. We started after the PC release, and we’re really digging into it now. I’ve already seen it running on PlayStation 5, but there were plenty of texture issues. There’s still a lot of work left: we need to meet each console’s requirements and optimize shaders for the different hardware. Typically, we assume about a year to make a proper console launch. So yes, probably next year, around the same time as Grand Theft Auto VI,” Bylos explained.

He added: “We’re still in discussions with Microsoft and Sony regarding cross-play, so no final decision has been made. From a technical perspective, it’s not an issue – we run the servers, and the games connect to our service. It really depends on what the platform holders decide.”

It’s worth noting that both Microsoft and Sony have long since dropped objections to cross-play. Nowadays, it’s become standard for new online multiplayer titles. If this is indeed the only obstacle, then Dune Awakening players on PC and consoles will likely be able to share the same Arrakis.
