MOVIE NEWS – The last thing I expected today was to see Nicolas Cage starring in a horror movie inspired by the childhood of Jesus Christ. The Carpenter’s Son has dropped its first trailer and will be released later this year.
The ever-versatile Nicolas Cage keeps returning to horror, a genre where he has delivered some unforgettable performances in films like Vampire’s Kiss (1988), Mandy (2018), or the more recent and highly praised Longlegs (2024). Now, he is set to play the Carpenter – but not just any carpenter – in The Carpenter’s Son. The movie takes disturbing inspiration from the early life of Jesus Christ, and its first trailer has already been released.
The Carpenter’s Son tells the grim story of a family living in hiding in Roman Egypt. The protagonist, referred to only as “the Boy,” begins to question everything under the influence of another mysterious child and rebels against his guardian, the Carpenter. “In doing so, he discovers innate powers and a destiny beyond his own understanding. As he learns to control his abilities, the Boy and his family become targets of natural and divine horrors,” reads the official synopsis shared by Magnolia Pictures.
Set for a controversial fall release
This biblical horror thriller is said to be inspired by the Infancy Gospel of Thomas, a 2nd-century apocryphal text that recounts supposed miracles of Jesus during his youth. From both the brief trailer and the official synopsis, it’s clear that The Carpenter’s Son avoids direct references by name but doesn’t really try to hide who the story is about. That’s why this is already shaping up to be one of the most controversial releases of the fall, although no exact premiere date has been revealed.
The film is directed by Lotfy Nathan and stars FKA Twigs as the mother, alongside Cage. It’s safe to expect campaigns aimed at stopping its release, but controversy will only add fuel to its publicity. As a curious anecdote reported by Movieweb, during production in Greece, Nicolas Cage was apparently attacked by a swarm of bees on set.
