Prey 2: Five More Minutes from Human Head Studios’ Cancelled Game! [VIDEO]

Before the release of Prey, there was Prey 2… it sounds strange, but it was meant to be the sequel to the 2006 game.

Last week, gameplay and concept art from Human Head Studios’ cancelled sequel surfaced on YouTube, but the original uploader later made it unavailable. Instead, several gameplay clips emerged on an old Duke4 forum thread, which was spotted by Dave Oshry of New Blood Interactive. The original post contained deleted Imgur links, but Oshry compiled the clips into a nearly five-minute video, offering a strong look at what the studio had envisioned for Prey 2.

The footage suggests Human Head was working on a game that, if released, would likely have been compared to CD Projekt RED’s Cyberpunk 2077, as its sci-fi world was far ahead of its time. This marks the third time in the past week that the cancelled sequel has resurfaced. In a recent interview, Pete Hines, Bethesda’s former head of marketing, discussed not only subscription services and Xbox Game Pass but also the challenges he faced deciding Arkane Austin’s projects and how he lost the battle over the name.

“Don’t even get me started… I pissed off some people internally because I fought hard against using that name. I’m the lead, but a lot of people on my team (brand, PR, and community) felt we were burdening it with a name. We’d spend more time explaining why it’s called Prey than talking about the game itself. I regret losing that battle. But nobody could have made more of a good-faith effort to change minds. The point was, we spent too much energy on why it was called Prey instead of focusing on what the game was. That was wasted energy. That was wasted excitement. We could have turned that into something positive.” said Hines.

It remains to be seen whether more footage of Prey 2 will surface, or if Human Head Studios’ unreleased version will ever become playable.
