TECH NEWS – The Chinese company’s 2025 smartphone lineup not only resembles Apple’s devices visually but now even in naming conventions.
Never underestimate Chinese smartphone makers’ ability to imitate Apple endlessly. For instance, Xiaomi has skipped an entire generation, renaming its upcoming series directly as the 17 line to better align with the iPhone 17. Instead of launching the Xiaomi 16 family, the company jumped straight to the Xiaomi 17, Xiaomi 17 Pro, and Xiaomi 17 Pro Max. Even the “Ultra” branding was swapped out in favor of Apple’s “Pro Max.”
On Weibo, Xiaomi stated that the 17 series represents its biggest leap forward yet. Interestingly, the base model’s price is not expected to rise, despite featuring Qualcomm’s most advanced SoC to date, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. The Xiaomi 15 retailed for RMB 4,499 (~$630), so the Xiaomi 17 will likely stay in that range.
xiaomi’s NEVER beating the iPhone copy allegations 😭
their last phones were called the Xiaomi 15, Xiaomi 15 Pro, and Xiaomi 15 Ultra
this year, they’ve completely skipped the 16 series and also changed the naming system to Xiaomi 17, Xiaomi 17 Pro, and Xiaomi 17 Pro Max 🤦 pic.twitter.com/JF44UphNz5

Leaks suggest the Xiaomi 17 Pro Max will include a rear display integrated into the camera island, giving users quick access to notifications without lifting the phone. Renders also show a third module beneath the main lens, likely an ultra-wide-angle camera.
But must Xiaomi really go so far as to copy Apple’s naming conventions too? It borders on the ridiculous.
