Silent Hill f: Konami Made a Player-Friendly Mistake on Steam, But Is Fixing It!

Konami is taking a strict approach to NeoBards Entertainment’s title on Gabe Newell’s popular digital platform, Steam.

If you played Silent Hill f on PC this weekend, you may have noticed some extra digital content that you didn’t pay for. Some players of the Steam version accidentally gained access to exclusive content originally intended only for pre-orders or the deluxe edition, including additional costumes, an item pack, a digital art book, and a digital soundtrack.

Standard version owners got the deluxe edition content…

Some of this content was also made available to players who only purchased the standard edition of Silent Hill f. Although it’s unclear how much of the exclusive content those players received, several users on the Silent Hill subreddit reported that they had access to exclusive costumes but not to the soundtrack or other bonuses.

Because of this, it’s not worth getting too excited about what might be available on Steam, as it seems Konami is not going to let this mix-up slide. On Friday, the Japanese publisher posted the following message on the official Silent Hill Twitter account: “We’re investigating an issue on the Steam version of Silent Hill f where bonus and pre-order content not included in the purchased edition is temporarily accessible. A patch is scheduled to be released soon. Thank you for your continued support.”

It seems clear that Konami will not allow standard edition players to keep the exclusive content they received by mistake. This is unfortunate but hardly surprising. Whatever your opinion of digital deluxe editions — which are generally not very popular — giving away free skins would undermine the business model. If Konami allowed players to keep these extras, those who paid extra for the Silent Hill f deluxe edition (or pre-ordered the game) would have essentially wasted their money — and Konami certainly won’t be issuing refunds.
