Nowadays, it’s pretty much natural that most games are released digitally, so we don’t have to get to a game store personally to pick the game up physically. Paul Raines, the CEO of GameStop has talked about this topic…
He thinks that disc-based games will stay with us forever, even if physical music sales has dropped 50, while movie sales dropped by 60 percentage since their peaks, respecitvely. He finds it a complimentary business model that the games are sold on discs/cartridges, and extras can be downloaded to them online; he also thinks that virtual reality games will follow this formula later on.
We do have to point out that this is a company that buys back even just one-time used copies for dirt cheap to sell them again for just 5-10 dollars lower than a new copy. However, we think that Rainey has a good point about this topic – we can still install games from discs, even if the digital version gets removed from the PlayStation Store. Will physical games cease to exist? To answer the question shortly: No.
