The unexpected cancellation of Prime Video’s Countdown shocked both fans and the production team, but Jensen Ackles and showrunner Derek Haas quickly broke their silence. While Ackles shared an emotional video message, Haas gave closure to one of the show’s unresolved mysteries.
Anthony Lund, veteran journalist and editor at MovieWeb, known for his deep love of cinema and encyclopedic knowledge of movie trivia, reported on another one of Prime Video’s surprising cancellations: Countdown. Despite remaining in the U.S. Top 10 chart for weeks, the streamer decided not to renew the action series starring Jensen Ackles.
In a heartfelt video posted to Instagram, Ackles expressed his gratitude while admitting his disappointment: “As some of you may have seen already, Countdown did not get picked up for another season. Amazon let it go, and it’s a bummer. I had such an amazing time making that show, had an absolute blast with the cast and crew. Thank you to Derek Haas for writing those characters and thanks to Amazon for giving us the opportunity. Sometimes you can set out to do your best and tick all the boxes, but it’s out of your hands. That’s the way it goes in this business. So that’s the end for Mark Meachum, but I’m thankful for the experience — see you down the road on something else, I guess.”
Showrunner Haas Confirms Oliveras Survived
Fans hate nothing more than when a series ends with loose ends left dangling, and Countdown was no exception. The final episode set up a new arc for Mark Meachum, but showrunner Derek Haas stepped in to provide fans with some closure: “Hey, thank you to Amazon Prime and a great cast and crew for our season of Countdown! Fun to make all around! (pssst… Oliveras lived.)”
Although the show maintained a strong U.S. viewership, it didn’t attract enough global traction for Amazon to renew it. Still, fans can look forward to Ackles’ return to Prime Video in The Boys Season 5 and its upcoming prequel, Vought Rising. The loss of Countdown stings, but at least the mystery of Oliveras’ fate has been settled.
