Created by former BioWare veterans under the wing of Dungeons & Dragons’ owners, Exodus promises an ambitious blend of emotional storytelling and deep gameplay inspired by Horizon and Metroid Prime.
Several teams founded by industry veterans are shaping the next era of RPGs, and one of the most promising among them is Archetype Entertainment. Formed by former BioWare developers, the studio is working on its debut project, Exodus, a large-scale sci-fi RPG that naturally inherits the Mass Effect DNA while drawing inspiration from both Horizon and Metroid.
The creative minds behind the project include James Ohlen, Drew Karpyshyn, and Chad Robertson — veterans known for shaping classics like Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Jade Empire, and the Mass Effect saga. Backed by Wizards of the Coast, the owners of Dungeons & Dragons, the team aims to recapture the emotional storytelling and depth that defined their earlier work — but with a broader scope and modern design philosophy.
In a community Q&A, Robertson explained that Exodus borrows from Horizon: Forbidden West’s tactical approach to combat, requiring players to study enemy weaknesses and adapt their strategies. “With Horizon, it’s all about the elemental layer of combat — making choices based on what you’re up against and using the right tools to exploit your enemies’ designs,” he said.
A Cosmic Journey of Solitude and Discovery
According to game director Chris King, Metroid Prime has been another major influence, particularly in capturing a sense of isolation and wonder. “What fascinates me most is exploration — being alone in space, in the middle of nowhere. I love the solitude of Metroid Prime,” King explained, adding that Exodus will also feature roguelike mechanics.
With its star-studded cast — including Matthew McConaughey lending his voice to one of the main roles — and the ambition of its developers, Exodus is already one of the most anticipated RPGs of this generation. There’s no confirmed release date yet, but the game’s Steam page now carries a promising “coming soon” label.
