Horizon Fans Panicked Over The New MMO, But Guerrilla Has Something Else In The Works

The announcement of a new Horizon title as a PC and mobile MMO, Horizon Steel Frontiers, left many players rolling their eyes and wondering about the future of the series on PlayStation 5. Guerrilla Games has now stepped in to calm the waters, stressing that Aloy’s saga is not being abandoned and that the studio is already busy with new Horizon projects.

One of this week’s biggest surprises from PlayStation was the reveal of a brand new Horizon game, although this time it is very different from what we saw with Horizon: Zero Dawn and Horizon Forbidden West, and it does not follow the VR path of Horizon: Call of the Mountain. Horizon Steel Frontiers is an MMO in development at NCSoft, currently announced only for PC, Android and iOS. With no mention of PS5 and a South Korean partner in charge, many fans worried that Guerrilla Games might be stepping away from Aloy’s adventures. The developer has now made it clear that this is not the case and that it continues to create titles in the franchise.

Guerrilla has helped boost the visibility of Horizon Steel Frontiers with several posts on X, praising NCSoft’s work and celebrating the expansion of the Horizon universe. In the final message of this thread, the team took the opportunity to reassure players that it has not walked away from Aloy’s world. “We’ve loved collaborating with NCSoft and are beyond excited to be hunting machines together in the world of Horizon; at Guerrilla, we’re still busy working on more ways for you to do just that. More information coming soon.” With this, the studio underlined that internal Horizon projects are still very much alive.

Guerrilla Is Working On Another Horizon Multiplayer Game

So, does this automatically mean that Guerrilla Games has already kicked off work on Horizon 3? According to the information available, not exactly. Citing sources close to the studio, Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier explains that Horizon Steel Frontiers is a separate MMO, distinct from the multiplayer experience that Guerrilla itself is building. This would allow fans to return to the universe of machines and wild nature across two different online titles, NCSoft’s MMO and the PlayStation studio’s own project. Schreier even describes the latter as the developer’s “next big project”.

In other words, the launch of a hypothetical Horizon 3 does not appear to be on the cards in the short term, since Guerrilla Games is currently focused on its multiplayer title. Beyond the fact that it is designed around online play, we still know very little about this game, but the release of Horizon: Call of the Mountain for PS VR2, the crossover LEGO Horizon Adventures and now Horizon Steel Frontiers all show that PlayStation is keen to explore new formats and genres with the Aloy franchise. The mobile MMO looks less like a replacement for the main series and more like another experiment within a growing universe.
