Baldur’s Gate 3: Larian Dropped a Chill Animation Packed With Meme and Mod Nods [VIDEO]

Larian Studios stepped away from its usual streams and developer chats for a half-hour “chill beats” animation that openly celebrates the Baldur’s Gate 3 community. It’s equal parts relaxing background video and dense Easter egg hunt, with constant winks at popular memes and mod culture.

Larian Studios also put together some laid-back music, effectively giving an official nod to just how strong its community is – and how formidable its modding scene has become.

The studio’s community-facing Channel From Hell channel typically uploads livestreams and developer interview videos. The newest post is a little different. Borrowing the chill-beat vibe that shows up everywhere from World of Warcraft to Victoria 3, Larian Studios unveiled a half-hour video called Chill Demonic Beats To Long Rest To. It plays a mellow version of Raphael’s Final Act while Spud Gun Studios’ animated take on the cast hangs around camp.

Wyll plays ball with Scratch, Karlach tries to drink from a barrel, Shadowheart meditates, Astarion paints, Gale studies, and Lae’zel kicks a hacky sack around with a severed mind flayer head. Just normal camp behavior. The video is loaded with Easter eggs, like a sign pointing toward Baldursgata – a real place in Iceland whose street sign Baldur’s Gate fans spotted years ago. And if you remember the video Larian Studios released to celebrate the official rollout of the mod tools – where the Wizard of Mod unleashed chaos across the Forgotten Realms with giant rabbits and githyanki human noses, among other things – you’ll see plenty of callbacks here too, including a massive rabbit that delivers Scratch. Sometimes Barcus even shows up with it instead of the ball.

The Wizard of Mod appears with an octagonal wand and a traffic-cone hat to turn Shadowheart into a tabaxi and dress Karlach up as Let Me Solo Her. Gale tests his mage hand spell on stew ingredients, including a boot – presumably a magical one – then pulls out a Glock. Among Astarion’s paintings is a censored, spicy Karlach, plus Larian Studios CEO Swen Vincke and, of course, handsome Astarion.

Bless them for still making this kind of playful stuff. Meanwhile, Larian Studios’ next game, Divinity, seems to have taken a few lessons from Baldur’s Gate 3 and is trying to improve in areas like companions that feel like a natural part of the world and handcrafted loot.
