Super Mario Galaxy Movie Already a Record Holder

MOVIE NEWS – Three records were broken three years ago by The Super Mario Bros. Movie. It delivered the best animated opening weekend, surpassing the previous record holder, Frozen. It became the highest-grossing video game adaptation with 1.36 billion dollars, while studio Illumination also scored the year’s most successful production.

The next Mario adventure, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, is coming soon and must achieve a lot to surpass its predecessor, yet it is already a record holder in one category – although the studio and distributor may not be too happy about it, and other productions share this distinction.

A 30-second trailer for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie will air on February 8 during America’s biggest sporting event, the Super Bowl, for 10 million dollars (3.22 billion forints). Such pricing has never occurred in the event’s history. Illumination will not stop there, as another highly anticipated production, Minions 3, will also have its trailer shown during the Super Bowl, meaning the studio paid 20 million in total for two half-minute appearances.

The Super Bowl can demand such a high amount because last year’s broadcast reached a historic ratings record. According to Nielsen Media Research, 127.7 million viewers watched, partly thanks to several streaming services airing the event live. In this light, 10 million may not seem so extreme.

Also premiering during the Super Bowl break is a new trailer for Steven Spielberg’s long-awaited sci-fi Disclosure Day, which may reveal why alien beings appear during prime time in the middle of a weather report, as seen in the first teaser. A new trailer for the biopic about the King of Pop, Michael, will also be shown.
