MOVIE NEWS – Alden Ehrenreich has joined Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler in the cast of Miami Vice ’85. Joe Kosinski’s feature will revive the world of the celebrated 1980s television series, although Ehrenreich’s character is still being kept completely under wraps.

Miami Vice ’85 has added another recognizable name ahead of its planned 2028 release. The production has not disclosed whom Ehrenreich will play, leaving open several possibilities: he could be another police officer, a federal agent, or the principal threat facing the film’s detectives.

Jordan and Butler will lead the picture as Sonny Crockett and Ricardo Tubbs. Drawing inspiration from the original show’s 1984 pilot, the story returns the partners to Florida’s dangerous drug trade while attempting to preserve the music-driven, neon-soaked identity that made the television series distinctive.

Joe Kosinski is rebuilding 1985 Miami for IMAX

Top Gun: Maverick filmmaker Joe Kosinski is directing from a screenplay by Dan Gilroy. The plot is firmly set in 1985, production is expected to begin later this year, and the movie is being conceived as a large-format IMAX experience rather than a modest television revival.

This also means the film will not continue Michael Mann’s darker 2006 modernization starring Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx. Kosinski is instead returning to the television source, combining its period style with contemporary big-screen action and a new ensemble.

Ehrenreich’s undisclosed role may ultimately prove central to the plot. The release remains some distance away, but the participation of three prominent leads and Kosinski suggests Universal is preparing a substantial relaunch rather than a minor exercise in nostalgia.
