MOVIE NEWS – We cross every line, says the first trailer for Scary Movie, and the creators aren’t exaggerating. The sixth entry in the parody series doesn’t just go after the most popular horror films – it takes aim at political trends, too.
“We’re going to cancel cancel culture,” Marlon Wayans told Entertainment Weekly. He’s one of the film’s writers and stars, and arguably one of the key brains behind the franchise. He was pointing to the fact that the series, from the start, wasn’t only about spoofing genre tropes – it also made a point of mocking political correctness when it went overboard, and the team says they’re returning to that tradition after two decades. But it’s not just about that.
“This is a multi-generational movie,” Wayans explained. “It’s a dialogue that stretches across generations, speaking to everyone – from our generation all the way to – where are we now? – Generation Alpha.”
Wayans also described what pushed them back toward the franchise. The first two Scary Movie films were tied to the Wayans brothers – Marlon, Keenen Ivory, and Shawn – but they didn’t make the third because they clashed with producers Harvey and Bob Weinstein. The two men running Miramax wanted to lock the Wayans brothers into a humiliatingly unfavorable deal after the massive success of the first two films. The dispute ended with the split. Now, the comedian points to the collapse of the Weinstein empire as one of the reasons they’re back.
“They were incredibly evil, ugly people,” he said in an earlier interview about the Weinsteins, without hiding his anger. “They took the franchise from us and quietly handed it to someone else – we had to find out from the newspapers.”
The Weinstein empire collapsed after Harvey – accused of molesting Hollywood actresses for decades – was sentenced to life in prison. Miramax was bought by a Qatari company and Paramount, and Bob’s successor company, The Weinstein Company, went bankrupt after nobody wanted to work with them.
Wayans says another motivation was that he wanted to work with his brothers again. And as a third reason, he claims it was God himself who assigned him the job. “Son, this is your calling – so do it,” he recalls the Lord saying.
