MOVIE NEWS – Josh Holloway says he would like to develop a Red Dead Redemption movie and take on the role of John Marston. Fans believe the Lost star already has the ideal look to portray Rockstar’s iconic protagonist.
Red Dead Redemption has long ranked among the video games most suited to a screen adaptation, and Josh Holloway has now joined those hoping to see its western story in theaters. Speaking to the crowd at Fan Expo Boston, the Lost star said he likes Rockstar Games’ series, wants to turn it into a movie, and would also be interested in playing the lead.
Holloway could be a natural fit for John Marston. The actor appeared as Roarke Morris in the third and fourth seasons of Yellowstone, giving him experience in a modern western setting, while his screen presence and harder-edged roles would suit the former outlaw.
The 2010 game Red Dead Redemption takes place in 1911, during the decline of the American frontier. Marston is forced by the government to hunt down members of his former gang after his wife and son are taken hostage, creating a personal and tragic story that could translate powerfully to film.
Before Holloway, Henry Cavill, Jack Black, and Jeffrey Dean Morgan had also argued that Red Dead Redemption deserved an adaptation. Interest in video game productions has grown dramatically after successes such as The Last of Us, while Rockstar’s western franchise already commands an enormous global audience.
Neither Rockstar Games nor PlayStation has announced a Red Dead Redemption movie, so Holloway’s proposal is currently a public ambition and casting idea rather than an active production. His enthusiasm nevertheless highlights the cinematic potential that John Marston’s story continues to hold.
