Stop Killing Games Distances Itself from the Grand Theft Auto VI Leaks!

Rockstar and Take-Two’s game is leaking — and leaking more and more — and the companies want to distance themselves from it as much as possible.

Those responsible for the major Grand Theft Auto VI leak published a manifesto containing numerous statements that will be familiar to anyone who follows the Stop Killing Games campaign, most notably the demand that every game with single-player content have an offline fallback mode to ensure games remain playable after external server support is discontinued. In response, Stop Killing Games released a statement distancing itself from the matter and urging its followers not to participate in such actions.

A statement on the current GTA 6 Footage leak situation

“Footage from Grand Theft Auto VI has leaked, and a group of hackers, whom we will not name here to avoid giving them further attention, claims responsibility. The footage itself appears to be genuine. Take-Two has already issued DMCA takedowns, and the speed of these takedowns is a strong signal of authenticity. The group is using the leak to promote a meme coin by attaching crypto links and QR codes to the footage and asking people to pay for more. Do not send these people your money, no matter how sympathetic you may be to their cause. This is illegal. Frankly, we feel for everyone at Rockstar who has to go through this ordeal again, especially with Rockstar’s own official ‘Extended Look’ premiering in just over a week.

To us, using illegal means to make a point is unacceptable and does nothing to protect our right to continue using what we paid for. No matter how strongly you disagree with upper management’s decisions at these companies, thousands of developers worked hard on this project, and they’re the ones who will be affected the most. Channel your frustration into something constructive. This kind of act is destructive and helps no one. Worse yet, it risks tarnishing the reputation of our communities and our chances of making change. History isn’t on the leaker’s side either. The last person to do this to Rockstar ended up with an indefinite hospital order in 2022. This isn’t a cause worth risking your money or your future on. We seriously doubt that the hack was for that reason. We expect this to continue, and it is already being mentioned negatively in our discussions with lawmakers. Do not participate or engage with these kinds of actions,” the statement reads.

The method by which the leakers obtained the Grand Theft Auto VI recordings is currently unknown, but it is irrelevant here. This is the kind of leak that Rockstar, Take-Two, and the U.S. government will aggressively pursue and severely punish. It’s not surprising that Stop Killing Games, which has gained significant political momentum over the past few years, wants to distance itself from it.

Speaking of leaks, we’ll be coming back to that in today’s news.
