Capcom surprised everyone during the broadcast by showing this game.
The company released a three-minute overview trailer for Onimusha: Way of the Sword and teased that more information would be shared in the coming days. This game was not mentioned among those that would be featured at Capcom Spotlight. The video reveals that the protagonist, Miyamoto Musashi, set out to prove his swordsmanship, but he was struck down by the Genma, a race of immortal demons. However, Musashi is inexplicably revived with the Oni gauntlet strapped to his arm. He then sets out to cleanse the land of the Genma invasion. He’ll also have to contend with his longtime rival, Sasaki Ganryu, but he’ll be able to rely on several allies. Capcom promised that, throughout Onimusha: Way of the Sword, players will encounter strange tales and unsettling mysteries, despite the game’s previous description as linear.
Capcom is reviving an old franchise; the first installment, Onimusha: Warlords, was released in early 2001 for the PlayStation 2 (PS2), in 2002 for the Xbox, and in 2003 for the PC. It was remastered on January 15, 2019, for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC. The action-adventure hack-and-slash game received a sequel in 2002 for the PS2 titled Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny. This game was remastered for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC on May 23, 2025. This was followed in 2004 by Onimusha 3: Demon Siege for PS2. It was released for PC in 2005 or 2006 when the Japanese company was producing extremely poor-quality PC ports. (Just think of Devil May Cry 3 Special Edition or the original Resident Evil 4.)
Onimusha: Way of the Sword is set to release in 2026 for the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC. Interestingly, the Nintendo Switch 2 is missing from the list. Does Nintendo really not want multiplatform games to be available on this platform?
