Arrowhead Game Studios issued a statement condemning the way the Dev D10 challenge situation unfolded.
What started as a charitable initiative within the Helldivers 2 community escalated into a controversy so severe that it forced Arrowhead Game Studios to speak out. The incident began on February 28 with a Reddit post — since deleted along with the account — in which a user issued a challenge to the game’s developers, which quickly became known as Dev D10. The post stated that if four Arrowhead developers published a video completing a full operation on Oshaune at difficulty 10, finishing all objectives in the current Supreme Order, with no modifiers or cheats, the user would donate $1,000 to a charity of Arrowhead‘s choosing. If the developers failed or ignored the challenge, the money would go to a charity of the poster’s own choice. Either way, the donation was guaranteed.
The community, however, soon began distorting the original terms, creating a far harder version. One user in particular promised to donate even more money if Arrowhead completed the game’s most demanding operation using an entirely unsuitable loadout — one fans described outright as a “troll build.” Many people confused this new version with the original challenge, splitting the community into two camps: one claiming that Arrowhead‘s developers were cowards for avoiding the Dev D10, and another directly attacking the challenge’s creator on the mistaken assumption that he was holding $1,000 “hostage” to force the developers to complete a mission at maximum difficulty with a senseless build — when in reality, the money was always going to be donated regardless.
In an attempt to clear up the confusion, the challenge’s author posted a video explaining the original terms — but by appearing on camera and sharing personal details on Reddit, he gave the most malicious users an opening: he was doxxed. Those players not only spread his personal information but also tracked down and harassed the horse shelter where he volunteered, flooding it with calls. Arrowhead responded via its own Discord server: “Due to the growing hostility in the community, we must address this directly. We do not tolerate threats of violence, harassment, or doxing toward anyone — players, creators, developers, moderators, or our teams in any community space. This type of toxic behavior is unacceptable and we will never tolerate it.”
The story ended on a bleak note. After several hours of silence, the challenge’s creator returned to Reddit to leave a farewell message for those who had genuinely expressed concern: “I have been banned from the horse rescue I’ve been volunteering at since 2011 for safety reasons (which is understandable, they are just trying to survive and can’t deal with this) and I have been let go from my job at an electric company after 7 years. Basically, my life has been ruined overnight by something I thought would be fun and productive with a game I loved and passionately supported.” He announced he would be leaving the community, Reddit, and the game entirely.
And so, a deeply unfortunate end came to an initiative that had only ever aimed to combine an interesting challenge with a charitable donation. Instead, the community showed its worst face — and destroyed one player’s life in the process.
