Bellwright has quietly built a massive community on Steam through word of mouth alone – Donkey Crew‘s medieval RPG has crossed the one million copies sold mark while still in early access, coinciding with its biggest content update yet, Maiden Voyage.
On Steam, there are games that bet everything on major marketing campaigns – and then there are those that, almost in silence, gradually build an enormous community through word of mouth. Bellwright clearly belongs to the latter camp. The creation of Polish indie studio Donkey Crew, it is an open-world medieval survival RPG in which you play as an outlaw falsely accused of murdering a prince, who returns to his homeland to lead a revolt against a tyrant. The game is not limited to the classic loop of gathering resources and building a cabin: the emphasis is on raising and expanding your own settlements, recruiting villagers, training them, and turning them into a militia that defies the established order – an experience closer to building a rebellion than a traditional sandbox.
This blend of survival, construction, village management, and combat has been quietly gaining ground on Steam since its early access launch in April 2024, and the game has now crossed the one million copies sold milestone – while still not fully released. The developers announced the figure alongside the Maiden Voyage update, the largest content expansion in the game’s history.
The Maiden Voyage Update and the Road to 1.0
The Maiden Voyage update is the game’s biggest expansion to date: the new Halmare Isles map grows the game world by roughly 25% compared to the original, offering over 10 square kilometers of new content. The update brings new story-based quests with multiple progression lines, expanded armor and equipment, new animals and buildings, and a Loyalty and Faction system that adds greater weight to alliance management. A revamped character creator, new weapon types, cloaks, and various quality-of-life improvements round out the package.
Donkey Crew‘s roadmap now points toward the 1.0 release on PC, with console versions also announced for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series – though no release date has been confirmed for any platform. The game currently holds a Very Positive rating on Steam, and for anyone looking to build their own medieval kingdom from the ground up, Bellwright is well worth a look.
