The Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition demo shown at GDC 2026 marks a significant step forward compared to earlier builds: frame rates now sit in the 30-40 FPS range, movement is more responsive, and visuals are noticeably sharper. However, FromSoftware has still not announced a release date.
Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition was originally planned for a 2025 release on Nintendo Switch 2, but FromSoftware and Bandai Namco pushed it to 2026 in October 2025, citing the need for “performance adjustments.” The delay was no surprise: the Gamescom 2025 demo had received heavily negative coverage due to severe frame rate issues, with handheld mode reportedly dropping below 15 FPS at times, and media had been forbidden from capturing footage.
At GDC 2026, Bandai Namco allowed handheld gameplay to be recorded – itself a sign of improved confidence. The 15-minute demo covered the early portions of the game, up to the Margit boss fight. According to GameSpot, frame rates hovered in the 30-40 FPS range and Limgrave looked solid despite some graphical concessions. RPG Site reported that the 30 FPS target held consistently even in rain and with active NPCs present, while Polygon noted the most significant dip occurred while riding Torrent through rain. Docked mode also appeared well-optimized.
The 15-minute demo was limited to the game’s less demanding early areas, so performance across the DLC content or in multiplayer remains unknown. FromSoftware has not announced a specific release date, though the 2026 window remains in place.
