If You Love Strategy and Fantasy Games, This Is a Date Worth Writing Down

Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era has finally locked in its early access launch date, which means fans of the genre now know exactly when they can step back into the series’ world. Unfrozen has confirmed that the game will enter early access on April 30. That alone is a meaningful milestone, but the studio has also outlined what players can expect from the game’s first public phase.

After teasing strategy and fantasy fans for months with trailers and previews, Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era has finally confirmed its early access release date. Unfrozen’s project, published by Ubisoft and Hooded Horse, is now about to hit one of the biggest milestones in its development, and the team has already shared a detailed look at the content that will be available when that version goes live. For long-time followers of the legendary Heroes of Might and Magic franchise, April 30 is now officially the day to circle.

According to the official information published on Steam, players will have no shortage of things to dig into during early access. That matters even more because this marks the return of a Ubisoft series that has effectively been silent for an entire decade. The developers did not downplay that fact either, writing in their message that it has been more than ten years since the last Heroes game, and that they feel honored to add a new chapter to the legacy they themselves grew up with.

What Will Be Included in the Early Access Version?

Unfrozen has broken down the early access offering into ten key points covering modes, mechanics, and systems that will be available from day one. At launch, players will get six distinct factions – Temple, Dungeon, Schism, Grove, Necropolis, and Hive – alongside an in-game tutorial and the first act of the campaign, with the rest of the narrative planned for version 1.0. There will also be predefined scenarios with standalone stories, and more of those are expected to arrive over the course of the early access period.

The mode selection also looks surprisingly full for a pre-release build. Classic, Single Hero, and Arena modes will all be available in both single-player and multiplayer, while online play will feature matchmaking, ranked matches, and leaderboards across all three multiplayer rule sets. On top of that, players will get Random Map Generator templates, hotseat support for playing with others on one PC, a set of puzzle-style challenges, and a pre-release version of the map editor. In other words, this is not arriving as a bare-bones test build, but as an early version that already looks fairly substantial.

Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era is designed as a prequel that welcomes back both veterans of the series and complete newcomers. Its turn-based battles in a fantasy setting will let players explore the world of Heroes of Might and Magic through the perspective of one of six available factions, while building armies, managing units, and recruiting heroes who can decide the outcome of a battle. Unfrozen currently plans to keep the game in early access for about a year, although the team has made it clear that the period could be extended if needed. Either way, one thing is now certain: in just days, thousands of players will be able to find out whether this comeback can really live up to the name.
