So it is still wise to treat any release window attached to this giant mod with a fair amount of caution. The team’s latest call for help made it easy to suspect another slip, but the project lead says that, from the inside, he still sees more reasons for optimism than panic.
Last week, the new appeal for assistance published by the Skyblivion team made it seem possible that the long-awaited mega-mod could be heading for another delay. This is the enormous project that recreates The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion inside the technology of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition. It was first meant to launch in 2025, then got pushed to 2026 at the last minute, and the wording of the latest update made it sound as if there was still a huge amount left to do for something that is supposed to arrive within the next eight months. Even so, Skyblivion project lead Rebelzize told PC Gamer that he remains fairly confident about where things stand, adding that limited resources have been a reality for the team for most of the past decade anyway.
“The call to action was an idea to try to get a few extra people to help with polishing the project. We listed all departments not because we are dead in the water and have nobody left to help, but because we have good momentum and want to take every opportunity to maintain it and find one or two more people to speed things up. My goal has never been to withhold this game from people any longer than necessary, but I owe it to everyone who has helped over the years to ensure that we deliver a functional game. Just as the team and I are passionate about our work, members of the community are too. However you voice your excitement, please take a step back and recognize the work and the people behind it. There are no ill intentions on our part, and everyone is doing their best to release the game ASAP,” Rebelzize said.
All quest locations have already been completed and have passed quality assurance checks, while the Imperial City – which had been described as the final major hurdle when last year’s delay was announced – has now reached the required milestone as well. Naturally, bug fixing is continuing the whole time. There is always a chance that something goes wrong and the project suffers another major setback, but based on what Rebelzize says he can currently see from the inside, he still feels pretty optimistic about how things are progressing.
