We’re completely serious about this title—you can actually do this in the previous game, too.
There are mods that completely transform the game, such as tweaks to the core experience that feel like they’ve always been there or standalone campaigns that could be released commercially. Today, however, we won’t be talking about any of those. We’re talking about Fallout: New Vegas on the PlayStation 3. In October, Nexus Mods user Pope74220 uploaded the original Fallout 3 mod, which is a perfect Gamebryo engine port of the New Vegas Greatest Hits Ultimate Edition box set for the PlayStation 3. This edition was released about a year after the game’s launch and features all the DLC, plus a cool red plastic Blu-ray disc. The disc looks like an unarmed weapon you can use to hit people, and we love how detailed the model is. Even the text on the back and the info fields below it are included!
In January, modder Zhang Yue Zhi finished the project by porting the PlayStation 3 version of Fallout: New Vegas to PC. You can instantly kill any character you hit with it, but only if you have the Wild Wasteland perk. Ivan Perdona created a video showing how the New Vegas version works, which we’ve embedded below. Initially, we assumed this project aimed to bring the overall experience closer to that of the PlayStation 3 version of Fallout: New Vegas, with a frame rate of 20–30 FPS, a resolution of 720p, and likely more glitches than the other versions.
As with many multiplatform games on seventh-generation consoles, the PlayStation 3 version of Fallout: New Vegas fell short of the Xbox 360 version in every respect. However, we believe this is precisely what gives the game its charm, even if that oversimplifies the point. The PlayStation 3 deluxe re-release has a certain atmosphere. Not even the Cell processor in Sony’s console could diminish the brilliance of Obsidian’s masterful design.
