Don’t assume that CD Projekt RED’s situation with Cyberpunk 2077 was unique. Undead Labs’ story is much the same.
It’s been nearly six years since State of Decay 3 was announced in July 2020. The game was revealed with a CGI trailer, which players have learned to view with skepticism over the years. They prefer to wait and see what the actual gameplay is like before getting truly excited.
At the time, we knew development was in the early stages, but Undead Labs studio head Phillip Holt recently revealed exactly how early the game was. In an interview with Sunny Games, published when Undead Labs announced registration for the State of Decay 3 alpha test, Holt addressed the trailer and the game’s status.
“There really wasn’t a game when we were working on that trailer; it was so early. There’s no zombie deer either. In 2020, there really wasn’t a game or a game team. It was so early. There were four or five people on the team. The game was basically just a Word document. Blur did the trailer, and it was all pre-rendered. I think it represented our thoughts at the time about what would be cool to explore in State of Decay 3. As we’ve had a chance to build the team and start working on the game, I think some of those elements will persist in the final product. But we’re also saying, ‘Yeah, we’re not doing zombie animals,’” said Holt.
This is unfortunate news for fans who thought including zombie animals in State of Decay 3 was a great idea. At least we’ve reached the point in the game’s development where Undead Labs is ready to talk about it again after years of silence. During that time, players could only speculate whether the game was still in development.
Hopefully, after the upcoming alpha test, we won’t have to wait much longer to learn more about State of Decay 3. We might even get to see actual gameplay during Microsoft’s Xbox broadcast in June.
