The fate of the game may hinge on another project. Since we don’t have much to report on its success, the studio itself might end up in the graveyard.
Star Wars Eclipse, the highly anticipated action-adventure game from Quantic Dream, is reportedly facing development difficulties. Nearly five years have passed since its 2021 announcement, and progress is reportedly very slow. In fact, the game is clearly years away from completion—if it gets finished at all. Quantic Dream’s latest multiplayer title, Spellcasters Chronicles, must secure the necessary funding to complete Star Wars Eclipse. Insider-Gaming reported all this information after speaking with sources familiar with the current state of Star Wars Eclipse. These sources suggest that the game is in particularly bad shape.
According to the site, Quantic Dream has completed a significant portion of the game, but developing the rest is proving difficult. The development team has made little progress in months. In December, a source said that, in its current state, the game is still years away from completion. The most alarming aspect of the report, however, is not merely that Quantic Dream is taking a long time to complete Star Wars Eclipse. Rather, it’s that Star Wars Eclipse may never be released because NetEase, Quantic Dream’s parent company, may ultimately reconsider its strategy regarding the studio’s existence.
Last year, NetEase cut funding for dozens of projects as part of its withdrawal from overseas studio investments. The situation was so serious that Quantic Dream had to issue a statement reassuring players that everything would be fine despite the cutbacks. Later that year, it was revealed that Quantic Dream was developing a free-to-play multiplayer project alongside Star Wars Eclipse. Spellcasters Chronicles launched on Early Access in February.
Revenue from Spellcasters Chronicles is expected to help fund Star Wars Eclipse’s development. However, if the game fails commercially, NetEase may reassess its commitment to the studio and halt further investment. If Star Wars Eclipse is indeed still years away from completion and NetEase expects significant returns from Spellcasters Chronicles before deciding to continue funding Star Wars Eclipse and Quantic Dream definitively, then Quantic Dream’s final days may be approaching.
A quick look at the number of Spellcasters Chronicles players on Steam shows that the peak was 888 concurrent players, and it has barely reached 200 since its release. Although the latest reviews are mostly positive, the overall rating remains mixed.
