Konrad and Mateusz Tomaszkiewicz believe that designing a game solely to maximise sales and profits is a reliable formula for failure. For the founders of Rebel Wolves, the quality of The Blood of Dawnwalker, player satisfaction, and the fulfilment of their artistic ambitions matter more than the raw sales figures recorded after its September 3 launch.
Some studios begin developing video games with the explicit goal of selling millions of copies, but Rebel Wolves is following a very different path. The Polish developer understands that nothing comes for free, and the team of CD Projekt RED veterans still needs The Blood of Dawnwalker to become a commercial success when it launches on September 3. Nevertheless, expected RPG sales are not driving its creative decisions, as the developers are far more concerned with delivering a complete, high-quality, and memorable experience for players.
Speaking to Radio Times Gaming, game director and former The Witcher 3 director Konrad Tomaszkiewicz explained that the studio’s philosophy is remarkably simple: success should not be measured solely by the number of copies sold. Rebel Wolves’ founders remain actively involved in development, including Konrad himself as game director and his brother Mateusz Tomaszkiewicz as creative director, meaning their primary ambition is to fulfil their artistic aspirations rather than hit a predetermined sales target. Konrad still acknowledged the importance of commercial success, since the revenue generated by the game will help fund the studio’s future projects.
“We don’t think that way. We’re artists, and all the company founders are still actively involved in development,” Tomaszkiewicz explained, adding that he would rather judge the success of The Blood of Dawnwalker through player feedback and recognition from the industry. “Sales are secondary. I believe that if the game is good, the sales will come. But if you’re thinking about sales while designing the game and trying to create a game with the sole aim of selling and making money, it will fail,” the director stated.
This is not the first time Tomaszkiewicz and his team have made it clear that their development philosophy places players at the centre of the experience. Only a few days earlier, Rebel Wolves announced that The Blood of Dawnwalker would launch without the Denuvo anti-tamper system. The studio made that decision to avoid a situation in which paying customers receive a potentially less optimised version than players using a pirated copy that could emerge shortly after release.
Rebel Wolves Is Already Planning the Saga’s Future
That philosophy will not end when the first game arrives, as Rebel Wolves has confirmed that The Blood of Dawnwalker was conceived from the beginning as the opening chapter of a larger saga. The consequences of players’ decisions may therefore extend beyond this individual adventure and continue to shape future instalments. The studio has already announced that save files will be transferable to upcoming games, allowing the choices made in its debut RPG to produce consequences in later chapters of the franchise.
