MOVIE NEWS – The newly launched Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord is not only expanding Darth Maul’s story, but also introducing a new supporting cast that looks strong enough to matter. Among them is Wagner Moura’s Brander Lawson, a character the creative team says was shaped by the spirit and character work of action classics such as Heat, The Untouchables, and even Die Hard, which helps explain why he already feels like one of the show’s most compelling additions.
Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord has already made a strong first impression, and not just because it puts Maul back at the center of the action. Part of what gives the series extra life is the way it surrounds him with new characters who seem designed to do more than simply orbit the title villain. One of the most notable is Brander Lawson, a police detective on the planet Janix, played by Wagner Moura. The character had appeared before in a Maul-centered comic, but his television debut carries much more weight, partly because Moura is exactly the kind of actor who can give immediate gravity to a role.
In an interview with MovieWeb, executive producer Matt Michnovetz explained that Moura’s name originally came from one of Josh Rimes’ casting suggestions, and that the team were already huge admirers of the actor. What really sealed the decision, however, was not simply his reputation, but the way he talked about Lawson during their meeting. Michnovetz said they barely discussed Star Wars at all. Instead, they focused on the character, the inspirations behind him, and the central tension that Lawson is a better detective than he is a father to his son. That conflict became one of the foundations of how the role was approached.
According to the producers, several classic films helped shape the character. Michnovetz specifically cited Heat, The Untouchables, and Die Hard as touchstones, which suggests the intention was never to create just another lawman dropped into the Star Wars galaxy. The goal was to build someone who feels tough, flawed, capable, and emotionally strained all at once. That gives Brander Lawson an identity that goes beyond his job title, because the performance and the writing are clearly drawing from a recognizable tradition of big-screen detectives and action-driven antiheroes.
The situation becomes even more interesting when you remember that Moura is now the second actor from Narcos to move into the Star Wars universe after Diego Luna. Seen from that angle, it is not hard to imagine Lawson eventually making the jump into live action as well if the audience responds strongly enough to him. Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord therefore stands out not only because it extends Maul’s presence, but because it also seems determined to build supporting characters who can survive beyond being simple background pieces in his story.
