Will the Next God of War Draw from Japanese Mythology Too?

Interesting rumors are swirling around Sony Santa Monica Studio’s next game, and it looks like a major shift may be on the way.

The new God of War, directed by Cory Barlog, is said to expand the franchise’s universe, and it would be the first entry in which Kratos is not the main protagonist. According to MP1st and Reddit, players in this still-unannounced title will explore other mythologies and find themselves in some rather strange company along the way. The first fresh rumor about the next installment, a project long said by some to actually be a new IP, comes from Reddit user IntrinsicGamer, who was already talking about the game back in 2023.

In a later post, the user shared more details. The protagonist of the new God of War would reportedly be Faye, not Freya as previously believed. Players would be accompanied by something like a gelatinous cube, and they would also wield a talking sword. The game would still explore multiple mythologies, but the leaker says they were specifically told it also includes Mayan elements. Faye, Tyr, and Kratos would all appear in the next God of War, although Kratos’s role is still unclear. Since Faye was already dead by the time of the 2018 game and God of War: Ragnarök, we may finally learn exactly how Kratos actually met the Jotunn.

Although MP1st could not confirm every single detail from the new Reddit post, the outlet did claim that multiple East Asian mythologies will be present in the game, as it reportedly includes both Chinese and Japanese mythological elements. That will hardly be surprising to people who played the last two mainline entries and know about the datamined cutscenes that hinted at an Egyptian setting for the franchise’s next chapter.

Unfortunately, it is still unclear when this game will be officially announced, but one thing already seems fairly certain: it will not be multiplatform, as Sony is reportedly moving away from PC ports. Since there have already been hints that the announcement is not far off, we probably will not have to wait too long to see how this title plans to push and expand the franchise, which is also expected to return to its roots in the future through remakes of the Greek saga that helped turn Kratos into one of gaming’s most recognizable characters.
