MOVIE NEWS – It took a surprisingly long time for Alien to make its way to television, but that finally changed in 2025. The franchise had already expanded through films, novels, comic books, and video games, yet a live-action TV series somehow remained absent for decades. Then Noah Hawley came along with Alien: Earth, whose first season earned a strong reception and secured a Season 2 renewal. Now it sounds like Hawley is thinking even further ahead, because he is speaking with striking confidence about the series’ future.
As Alien: Earth gears up to begin shooting its second season in London, in the same studio where several iconic Alien films were made, Hawley took time to speak with Deadline about where he sees the show going. Even though movies like Prometheus and Alien: Covenant, both directed by franchise creator Ridley Scott, received a more mixed response, the IP has stayed relevant, especially after Fede Álvarez’s Alien: Romulus gave it fresh momentum in 2024 and set up another sequel on the way.
The series is set two years before the events of the original Alien, and that alone gives it a distinct position inside the mythology. On top of that, it is the first time the franchise has really moved onto Earth, which opens the door to a very different kind of world-building. Hawley explained that he already has a very specific destination in mind for the story, even if he does not yet know exactly how long it will take to reach that point.
Hawley Thinks the Show Can Keep Going for as Long as It Stays Alive Creatively and Commercially
According to the writer and showrunner, he knows where he wants to take the series, but the journey itself may take time. He added that, as long as the quality of execution and the audience response remain in step with one another, the show could continue for as long as they want. In his view, franchises like this can keep giving back for a very long time if they are properly nurtured.
The first season ended on a surprising development involving Wendy and her relationship with the xenomorphs, though it is still unclear whether that thread will be picked up immediately in Season 2. Plot details remain tightly guarded, but Peter Dinklage has already been confirmed in an undisclosed role. Hawley also teased that Dinklage has a major part to play and that audiences will feel it is a worthy role for him. Whether that also means a longer-term place in future seasons remains to be seen.
Hawley is also developing a separate feature project, a remake of the Argentinian horror film Terrified, which could create a longer gap between seasons. Even so, the broader picture is fairly clear: the future of Alien looks strong not only in theaters but on television as well. If Season 2 proves as engaging as the first, Hawley may end up building another long-running series for himself, not unlike the multiple-season life that Fargo managed to sustain.
