If it were just one game, we’d say it happens to everyone. But when it comes to two games, both of which are tied to Xbox, it’s a bit of a funny situation.
The first game is Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight, which was made available on the Xbox Store earlier than planned. A player purchased a code for the game from Walmart, which allowed them to start playing right away. The Traveller’s Tales game, published by Warner, is set to release on May 22 for the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC, with a Nintendo Switch port to follow later. The press has likely received the review code by now, so they can write about the game once the embargo is lifted. Walmart may have distributed a code intended for the press rather than the general public.
The other game is also tied to Xbox: Forza Horizon 6. It will be released on May 19 for Xbox Series and PC, with a PlayStation 5 port to follow. The publisher is Xbox Game Studios. Playground Games, the developers of the game, made a mistake during an update: they released the game files without encrypting the pre-load, so the files leaked ten days before the release date. This happens sometimes, but it’s especially amusing because this game is going to be one of Microsoft’s flagship titles this year. Forza Horizon 5 achieved similarly strong results on the PlayStation 5, so we can reasonably expect the Japan-set sequel to be just as successful on Sony’s console.
What’s the lesson here? Perhaps developers and publishers should pay closer attention because, while such blunders are humorous, they’re still awkward. In any case, both games are coming out soon, so we won’t have to wait much longer.
