TECH NEWS – Gabe Newell’s latest gadget can do more than play the Wilhelm scream as an Easter egg – it can make music, too.
The Steam Controller is full of surprises. It yells when you drop it and can sing songs if programmed to do so. You don’t have to program it yourself, though. Just upload a MIDI file to the GitHub software, and the device will sing with all its might. The program is called SteamHapticsSinger and was recently released by CrazyCritic89. This software is an updated version of a program created 10 years ago by Pila and Roboron3042 for the 2015 Steam Controller. This time, it comes with fixes and updates for the new Steam device.
You can load tons of MIDI files into the software to see which ones sound good. Just drag them onto the .exe file. You’ll first need the USBDK for the software to work, but it should also work with the Steam Deck and the original Steam Controller. We’re just waiting for someone to connect 20 of these devices and start a band. Of course, don’t let that energetic – almost crazy – person try this anytime soon because, due to the backlog, it’s not that easy to get your hands on a controller these days.
We’ve embedded two examples from YouTube. The first is home turf, from Valve’s 2007 Portal. The song in question is Still Alive, and we still remember GLaDOS’s singing from The Orange Box, which included Half-Life 2, its two episodes, Team Fortress 2, and Portal, even though it was released over two decades ago. At that time, Valve believed in the episodic format. However, since then, we’ve realized that Gabe Newell and his team are absolutely like oil and water.
The second video is also tied to Valve; it comes from Portal 2. This time, the Steam Controller performs Want You Gone. No wonder – these tracks are the best fit for the hardware.
