The decision would not be up to them, but rather up to Take-Two, since the porting work would not happen without their agreement.
Virtuos is a studio that specializes in porting and remastering. They recently helped develop The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered and Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, and is preparing for a new challenge. After bringing L.A. Noire to the Nintendo Switch in 2017, Virtuos now wants to port two more Rockstar classics to the hybrid console: Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2.
In an interview with Pocket Tactics, Virtuos’ technical director Andy Fong said the team is eager to adapt the two games for the Switch because they are big fans of the titles and believe they can shine on the Switch again, bringing joy to more players. Given that they are massive open-world games with deep systems and mechanics, as well as significant graphical requirements, both ports seem impossible, but the Switch has already received a port or two that we previously considered impossible (e.g., The Witcher 3…).
It’s also worth noting that both games were developed for the previous console generation, and Grand Theft Auto V was developed for the generation before that. A porting expert like Virtuos has a good chance of figuring out how to bring both games to the Switch, which will celebrate its tenth anniversary soon. The team has spoken confidently about its porting capabilities, once claiming it could port any game to the Nintendo Switch. If it were to port Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2, that claim would certainly be backed up.
As cool as it would be, it’s worth considering who would want to play these games on the Nintendo Switch instead of the Nintendo Switch 2. Also, Red Dead Redemption 2 still hasn’t received a proper 60 FPS update for current-gen consoles. Although there have been news reports and rumors that one is in the works, nothing has materialized yet. Of course, among the more than 155 million Nintendo Switch owners, there are surely players who haven’t played either Grand Theft Auto V or Red Dead Redemption 2 (or either of them) and would be happy to play them on their handheld.
After all, Red Dead Redemption and several Grand Theft Auto games are already available on the platform. Why not round out the lineup with the two biggest games in the series so far?
