The Subnautica 2 Devs Apologize After Their First Big Fan Controversy

Subnautica 2 has become a massive Early Access success, but Unknown Worlds’ first major community dispute has quickly shown how sensitive the game’s non-violent survival formula can be. The developers have now apologized in an open letter for the tone of recent comments, while making it clear that traditional weapon-based combat is still not part of their plan.

Unknown Worlds is having a rather unusual journey with Subnautica 2. Broadly speaking, the underwater survival game has become one of the biggest hits of 2026: in just five days of Early Access, it sold more than 4 million copies and earned a 91% positive rating on Steam. Under normal circumstances, that kind of launch would be a clean victory lap, but the game has also triggered its first major community debate. Some fans want weapons so they can deal more effectively with the more dangerous creatures in Subnautica 2, while Unknown Worlds has repeatedly said that this is not the direction it wants for the game.

The debate escalated on social media and Discord. Since the Early Access launch, the developers have acknowledged that many players – especially a group of users from an undisclosed country – want weapons in Subnautica 2 so they can eliminate hostile sea creatures. The studio rejected that request because it has a different vision for its underwater experience, but the situation became much more uncomfortable when one Unknown Worlds employee responded to a Discord user by saying: “This isn’t a killing game. If you want to kill, play Sons of the Forest or something.” For many players, the line did not feel like a clear defense of creative direction, but like a dismissive shot at the community.

Unknown Worlds has now tried to cool the situation with an open letter, and it clearly apologized for the tone. “We understand that some recent comments from our team have made players feel ignored or undervalued. We are very sorry”, the studio wrote. The post says Early Access should not be a one-sided explanation from the development team, but a conversation with players. Unknown Worlds also stressed that feedback matters and that it does not want its communication to create negative feelings in the community.

The Creators of Subnautica 2 Still Don’t Want Weapons in Their Game

At the same time, the developers have not changed the core philosophy of the game. Unknown Worlds says it understands where the request for weapons is coming from: many players feel frustrated because some hostile creatures do not currently have clear, reliable, or satisfying counterplay. The studio accepts responsibility for that, writing that mitigation tools are not always clear, reliable, or satisfying, and that players do not always have enough confidence in how to react when a creature attacks. “This is not the experience we’re aiming for”, the team wrote.

That is why the next updates will not add weapons, but will instead improve creature behavior and the survival tools available to players. Unknown Worlds plans to adjust creature attack timing, aggression range, the effectiveness of flares and survival tools, and the way creatures interact with vehicles and bases. According to the studio, this matters because non-violent survival design only works if the player does not feel completely helpless, exposed, and poorly informed during an attack.

The letter also directly addresses the demand for more decisive ways to deal with enemies, including the ability to kill them. “We understand where that request is coming from. When the tools for mitigation or avoidance don’t feel effective, it’s natural for players to want a more decisive solution”, the studio wrote. Unknown Worlds added, however, that its current direction is not based on judging players who want combat, and not because the team believes those players are wrong.

According to the studio, Subnautica has always been built around vulnerability, exploration, and survival rather than traditional weapon-based combat. The developers believe this is part of what makes the series unique, but they also admit that the model only works if creature encounters feel fair, understandable, and engaging. Right now, the game is not yet where the team wants it to be, so several updates in the coming weeks will try to address the problems players have raised. Weapons, then, are still not on the table, but Unknown Worlds clearly recognizes that the current defensive systems are not explaining themselves well enough.

At the end of the letter, the developers also reframed what Early Access is supposed to mean. For Unknown Worlds, it is not just a period for collecting bug reports, but a collaboration with the community. “We won’t always be able to make every change requested, but we have a responsibility to listen carefully, explain our decisions respectfully, and show through our actions that player feedback is shaping the game”, the team wrote. The next updates will show whether this apology marks a real improvement in communication, or whether it was simply necessary damage control after Subnautica 2’s first major community storm.
