The Scream Queens Get the Joke, and They Even Like It

MOVIE NEWS – The creators of the Scary Movie franchise, the Wayans brothers, deliberately entertain audiences with taboo-breaking jokes – or rather the large majority that does not take offense at crude jokes made at the expense of various ethnic, sexual, cultural, or any other minorities. But what about the stars whose horror movie performances the Wayans brothers parody?

Anna Faris, one of the franchise’s biggest stars – who can once again be seen in the latest installment – recently spoke candidly about how the genre’s stars reacted at the time after she had parodied them. The character Cindy Campbell, played by Faris, pokes fun at the performances of Neve Campbell (Scream) and Jennifer Love Hewitt (I Know What You Did Last Summer). As Faris recounted, the actresses who were targeted were not offended when they saw their caricatures; in fact, they were pleased to have received such treatment.

When Faris met Campbell at an audition, she was initially embarrassed. “I felt awkward, I thought I had to apologize to her for what I had done to her, but she was incredibly adorable,” she recalled.

Jennifer Love Hewitt’s reaction was even more generous, which completely surprised Faris at the start of her career. Hewitt did not wait for an in-person meeting, but immediately expressed her appreciation after the film’s release. “Jennifer Love Hewitt sent me a huge bouquet of flowers. She wrote in the attached note: I think this movie is terribly funny! It was a really kind gesture from her.”
