State of Decay 3: Have the Developers Nailed the AAA Feel?

Rumors suggest this summer’s big Xbox broadcast will be the best in years, and let’s be honest: Microsoft really does need to make a move.

Almost six years have passed since State of Decay 3 was announced, but the long wait may soon pay off. In April, developer Undead Labs opened registration for a limited alpha test scheduled for May. A few days before this year’s Xbox Games Showcase, Windows Central editor Jez Corden said the game will not only appear at the event, but will also show off its new AAA-level feel.

“It’s almost certain that we’ll see State of Decay 3 at the showcase as well, considering that closed alpha testing is already underway with a small portion of the community and some YouTubers. And from what I’ve heard, it seems Undead Labs has really nailed the AAA feel that was missing from State of Decay 2. I’m particularly excited about this one” – Corden said.

One of the main shortcomings of the zombie-themed action-adventure-survival series has always been its lack of polish. That was understandable with the first game, since it was originally intended as an Xbox Live Arcade title, and the studio was still indie even though Microsoft agreed to publish the game. In the case of the sequel, however, that was less forgivable, even though it was still very entertaining to play at launch. State of Decay 3 will be the first game developed entirely under Microsoft’s umbrella, so expectations are much higher. If the studio can truly deliver on its promises, the game could perform very well.

Corden also said this year’s Xbox Games Showcase is preparing a huge amount of content, adding that the event could go down as one of the best Xbox showcases in recent years. As for other titles that may appear, Clockwork Revolution from inXile is almost certain to be part of the broadcast, while Blade from Arkane, or even the long-rumored Fallout 3 remake, may also surface during the show, which begins on Sunday at 10 AM Pacific.
