Planescape: Torment: Fan-Made Expansion Available for Download as a Mod! [VIDEO]

Sometimes, fans can take what the developers originally envisioned and take it even further – and the result is often surprisingly good.

Last year, we were thrilled to hear about Blizzard in Baator, a fan project that expands the world of our favorite CRPG, Planescape: Torment. It’s finally here, and the first act is available now. As the charmingly lo-fi video announcement explains, Blizzard in Baator is massive. According to the modders, it’s significantly larger than Siege of Dragonspear, so it will be released in several parts. It’s an ambitious mod, and the developers are trying to follow in the footsteps of the greatest RPG ever made.

Although Blizzard in Baator is available on Nexus Mods, downloading it from GitHub is recommended, as it’s easier to install that way. The new quests are designed for a Nameless One around level 16. You can either load an old save and continue from there or start a new game. Visit Zombie #000 in the Mortuary to level up and prepare for the game.

We can’t wait for the remakes of the original Baldur’s Gate games, but Planescape: Torment is our true love, and it would be great if it received a modern remake. Sigil is a city set within an arch that looms overhead as we walk its streets. The inability to look up and see the arch can be frustrating. We’re also not big fans of the real-time, pauseable combat, though at least there aren’t that many of those encounters.

If a remake isn’t in the works, we’ll settle for an unofficial expansion. We can’t resist the temptation to start over from the beginning, reach level 16 at our own pace, and then dive into the new content. In any case, though, we’re happy with this: it’s new content, albeit unofficial. Based on what we’ve seen so far, though, it would definitely pass muster.
