God of War Laufey: Do We Have to Wait Years for Faye’s Story?

According to a rumor, the studio behind the game may continue its now-traditional approach.

The long-rumored God of War Laufey, announced during the State of Play event, stood out not only at Sony’s event, but also among all the games unveiled at the Summer Game Fest. As we previously reported, marketing firm LevelUp evaluated the game’s performance based on trailers, press coverage, and social media activity. They concluded that the game far surpassed all other games unveiled that week.

However, the announcement did not include a specific release date, leaving fans concerned. Jason Schreier, an editor at Bloomberg, said the game won’t be years away, but he didn’t elaborate further. Now, renowned insider Nate the Hate has revealed that the developer, Santa Monica Studio, set a target date in the first half of 2027. However, he acknowledges that this date may have changed. The studio’s latest game, God of War: Ragnarök, was released on November 9, 2022. However, the California-based development team has historically preferred a March-April release window. Here are a few examples from the past:

God of War – March 22, 2005
God of War II – March 13, 2007
God of War III – March 16, 2010
God of War: Ascension – March 12, 2013
God of War reboot – April 20, 2018

It stands to reason that the situation will be similar this time around. This would give Sony plenty of time to market another major exclusive title this year, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, which Naughty Dog is working on. There’s also a small trend here: since 2013’s The Last of Us, Naughty Dog’s games have been released in late spring or summer.

The Last of Us – June 14, 2013
Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End – May 10, 2016
Uncharted: The Lost Legacy – August 22, 2017
The Last of Us Part II – June 19, 2020

The God of War Laufey development team revealed they will release more information in the coming months. We already know that the combat system blends Greek and Norse mythology, but many details remain unknown as the PlayStation 5 exclusive release approaches. It’s certain that there won’t be a PC port of this one either.
