Onimusha: Way of the Sword: Capcom May Change the Release Date!

Since Capcom has so far scheduled the game’s release in the middle of an extremely chaotic period, it would not be surprising if the Japanese company changed its plans.

We have already seen how many major titles are coming in September, and the craziest part of all this was that Onimusha: Way of the Sword, Control Resonant, and Silent Hill: Townfall are all set to release within just two days, on September 24-25. It now appears, however, that Capcom may move Onimusha out of the way and bring its release date forward to September 4. This new date was listed by Canadian retailer PNP Games, although other major retailers have not updated their listings yet. They may be ahead of everyone else, but it could also simply be a mistake.

Capcom has done this before with its latest game: Pragmata was originally due to launch on April 24, but arrived one week earlier, on April 17. In the case of the new Onimusha, however, this would be a more substantial, three-week change, and it would come after criticism concerning the demo’s low difficulty level. Some fans feel that Onimusha: Way of the Sword needs more time, not less. A September 4 release would put the game further away from Control Resonant and Silent Hill: Townfall, but would bring it into direct competition with Rebel Wolves’ open-world action RPG, The Blood of Dawnwalker, as well as the puzzle adventure game Orbitals. Both titles are coming on September 3. Capcom may feel, however, that it has better chances against two new IPs than against two established franchises such as Silent Hill and Control.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword is the first mainline entry in the series in twenty years, allowing players to step into the role of a young Musashi Miyamoto, whose appearance was inspired by legendary actor Toshiro Mifune, in a dark fantasy version of Kyoto set during the early Edo period. The ancient city has been overrun by demonic creatures called Genma, and Musashi, unwillingly bound to a cursed Oni glove, must free the land from evil while facing his rival, Sasaki Ganryu, who eagerly embraced the same power and was corrupted by it.

Combat is centered on precise swordplay: strikes, parries, and well-timed counterattacks deplete an opponent’s stamina, eventually creating an opportunity to execute a devastating finishing move, Break Issen. With the help of the glove, Musashi can absorb an opponent’s soul to restore his health, gain power-ups, or unleash special Oni abilities.

But let us see whether Capcom really confirms the change in release date.
