As though the announcement of Guild Wars 3 was not enough, ArenaNet‘s fantasy universe is already moving in a very different direction. Mistbound: Guild Wars Card Game will be the franchise’s first digital card game spin-off, developed by South Korean studio NC and globally published by Chinese entertainment giant bilibili.
ArenaNet‘s beloved universe has suddenly become far busier than many fans were expecting. Following the summer reveal of Guild Wars 3, the franchise has now unveiled its first card game spin-off, titled Mistbound: Guild Wars Card Game. The project is being developed by South Korean company NC, formerly known as NCSoft, whose history includes Lineage, Throne & Liberty, and the Guild Wars series itself. Global publishing duties are being handled by bilibili.
So far, the team has released an announcement trailer alongside a much longer development commentary, although the video has already caused controversy over its use of generative AI. According to the developers, that material was created strictly for promotional purposes, while the assets that appear in the game itself are meant to be produced entirely by human artists. The development discussion also revealed that Guild Wars was originally born from the idea of blending card games with MMOs, which is why ArenaNet studio head Colin Johanson believes the central idea behind Mistbound is actually much closer to the spirit of the series than it might first appear.
Not Your Usual Card Game
Mistbound is not built around simply throwing cards onto a static board. Players will deploy commanders with unique abilities and customizable retinues across a 5×3 tactical grid, where the exact placement, timing, and positioning of each unit are just as important as the cards in a deck. Controlling the battlefield and manipulating movement will be central to the experience: warrior cards can push or pull other units, while other characters can create illusions, open shortcuts, or place resources that can be used later.
NC says the game will expand over many years, but not merely so that each new card becomes stronger than the last and triggers the familiar power creep seen across so many digital card games. Mistbound: Guild Wars Card Game does not have a release date yet, but it is planned for both PC and mobile devices when it is ready.
