MOVIE NEWS – Brad Pitt returns to theaters in a tense survival thriller with a dog at his side. Heart of the Beast reunites him with director David Ayer for the second time after their work together on Fury.
Pitt plays a retired commando who suffers a plane crash in Alaska alongside his loyal German Shepherd. They can only rely on each other in the wilderness, which is filled with countless dangers. The premiere will arrive in the fall, but the first set photos have already set fans buzzing because of a seemingly minor, yet highly significant accessory.
The watch on Pitt’s wrist is not a simple prop, but a timepiece with a serious military history, according to Esquire, the magazine for gentlemen who care about themselves and their surroundings. Sharp-eyed watch experts noticed that the actor is wearing a rare vintage Rolex Submariner with no date window, reference number 14060.
It is one of the last classics in Rolex history made with a traditional aluminum bezel and drilled lugs. The choice of this special watch is not merely a matter of looking cool, as it carries a serious message. For those who did not grow up among antique Swiss watches, the bezel is the metal ring around the watch crystal, which can provide different information when rotated depending on the type of watch. In the case of the Rolex Submariner, the bezel measures time spent underwater.
David Ayer, who worked as a radar operator on a nuclear submarine when he was young, revealed that the watch is a direct reference to Will Chesney, a former elite soldier from SEAL Team Six. Chesney wore this kind of model during Operation Neptune Spear in 2011, which ended with the killing of Osama bin Laden. Pitt’s character’s German Shepherd, Odin, can also be compared with Chesney’s loyal four-legged companion, Cairo, which was likewise a specially trained military dog.
That is not all. The film’s costume designer, Amanda Neale, has gone all the way to maximize authenticity. She complemented the special watch with a red-and-green striped fabric strap and a Waltham-style wrist compass. This combination pays tribute to special units from the Vietnam War and Cold War eras, whose members often wore their Rolex and Tudor watches in exactly this way.
The timepiece worn by Pitt could cost as much as four million forints, depending on its condition and other parameters.
