Cyberpunk 2077 Has Surpassed The Witcher 3’s Six-Year Sales Record

Cyberpunk 2077 has exceeded 40 million copies sold worldwide, putting it 10 million units ahead of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt at the same point in its lifecycle. After its infamous launch, Night City’s story is no longer defined by CD Projekt RED’s biggest failure, but by one of gaming’s most remarkable comebacks.

The last six years have been both disastrous and extraordinary for Cyberpunk 2077. Its 2020 launch was defined by technical problems, severe issues on older consoles and anger from disappointed players, but CD Projekt RED did not abandon the project early. Patches, systemic overhauls, major updates and the Phantom Liberty expansion gradually brought new life to Night City, while every major improvement also attracted new buyers. The game has now reached a commercial milestone that places even the studio’s earlier giant success in a new light.

CD Projekt RED has confirmed that worldwide sales of Cyberpunk 2077 have surpassed 40 million copies. The game stood at 35 million units in November 2025, while more than 15 million additional copies were sold during the last two years.

Another five million copies in only a few months is an enormous result for a game that has been on the market for six years, particularly when the growth was not driven by a new major story expansion or a complete content relaunch. Cyberpunk 2077 continues to draw in new players, while many who set it aside after the troubled premiere have also returned.

That is why the game is now frequently mentioned alongside No Man’s Sky as one of the most famous redemption stories in the industry. After the launch problems were addressed, it became not only more stable, but also a fuller and more refined experience than the one most players encountered in December 2020. Night City still maintains strong daily activity, and it has become one of CD Projekt RED’s most important sources of revenue in recent years.

The developer also celebrated the milestone on social media, where fans congratulated the team in large numbers. It is a particularly meaningful reaction for a game whose studio had to rebuild not only its technology after release, but the trust of its audience as well.

The comparison with The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt makes the 40 million milestone even more striking. Geralt’s third adventure reached roughly 30 million copies during its first six years, while Cyberpunk 2077 is at least 10 million units ahead over the same period. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt remains ahead in lifetime sales, but the pace of the Night City RPG already shows that the gap between CD Projekt RED’s two biggest worlds is far narrower than anyone could have expected after the 2020 launch.

Cyberpunk 2077 may still have room to grow. The upcoming second season of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners could generate renewed interest in the game, while CD Projekt RED is already working on a sequel set in the same universe. That new game is still years away, but this latest result makes one thing clear: Night City has become one of the studio’s most important long-term franchises.
