PlayStation Returned to X With a Simple FlexStrike Post, but More Than 2,300 Angry Replies Arrived in 10 Minutes

After several days of silence, PlayStation returned to X with a promotion for the FlexStrike arcade controller, but players were not interested in the new accessory. The replies immediately turned toward Sony’s 2028 decision on physical game discs, generating thousands of protests within minutes. The community made it very clear that it has no intention of letting the end of physical releases pass without a fight.

There had been an unusual silence on PlayStation’s main X account since the company’s July 1 announcement. Sony revealed that it will stop producing physical discs for new games releasing on PlayStation consoles from January 2028, with future releases available only in digital formats through PlayStation Store and retail partners. The decision immediately triggered strong criticism from collectors, fans of disc-based games, and players concerned about the future of the second-hand market. PlayStation’s central X channel then stopped posting for several days, even though regional accounts continued operating normally and the company’s official YouTube channel kept publishing new videos.

That silence ended today when PlayStation used a straightforward post at 3:00 PM Spanish Peninsula Time to promote the FlexStrike wireless fight stick. The return did not unfold in the way Sony was likely hoping for. Within a single minute, the post had already collected around 500 replies, with a significant share of them focusing not on FlexStrike, but on the company’s 2028 decision to end physical game releases.

More than 2,300 replies had arrived within ten minutes of the post going live, and the total had reached 6,000 by the time the report was published. The scale of the backlash also shows that players are not merely voicing general dissatisfaction, but directly criticising Sony’s broader move toward a fully digital model. Many commenters argue that the decision threatens genuine ownership of games, collecting, lending, and resale. Others are worried about the effect on retailers, distributors, and the market for used games, all of which they believe could be seriously damaged if PlayStation fully abandons disc-based releases.

Memes, images supporting physical games, and direct messages to Sony quickly filled the replies. GTAonlineNews wrote: “You’re actively hurting customers, you don’t give a damn about them. This isn’t going to just disappear.” RinoTheBouncer added: “Bring back physical games! No disc, no buy!” Jchip focused on the ownership issue with a short message: “We want to own our games!”

The most uncomfortable part for Sony may be that the community refused to let the promotion of a new product divert attention from the larger controversy. The FlexStrike post was intended to put the company’s latest accessory in the spotlight, but the overwhelming majority of responses showed that players remain angry about physical media. Every sign suggests the protest will continue under PlayStation’s upcoming social media posts, because Sony has not yet offered a new explanation or any concession regarding the 2028 transition.
