Build A Rocket Boy is still fighting to rescue MindsEye after its disastrous launch turned Leslie Benzies’ science-fiction action game into one of 2025’s most notorious releases. Following months of patches and gameplay improvements, the studio is opening the full PC version for several days so players can judge the changes themselves.
Some games collapse at launch and quietly disappear, but MindsEye has remained impossible to forget. Expectations were considerable because the project was overseen by Leslie Benzies, the former producer closely associated with the Grand Theft Auto series, yet its 2025 debut was overwhelmed by technical failures and broader design complaints. The reaction was severe enough for the game to become widely identified as one of the year’s worst releases.
Build A Rocket Boy has refused to abandon it. Instead, the developer has continued rolling out fixes, gameplay revisions, and larger updates while repeatedly pointing toward the eventual rehabilitation of Cyberpunk 2077 as evidence that a deeply damaged launch does not have to define a game forever.
MindsEye Is Completely Free to Play for Several Days
Those efforts have begun producing a measurable change on Steam, where the game’s recent user reviews have climbed to a “Mostly Positive” rating. Its reputation is far from fully repaired, but the studio now wants potential players to experience the revised version directly rather than relying entirely on memories of its troubled arrival.
The complete PC edition of MindsEye can be downloaded and played free through Steam until 7:00 p.m. on July 20. The offer is not available on Xbox Series X|S. PlayStation 5 owners have a more limited alternative, as PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers can access a two-hour trial of the full game through the PlayStation Store.
“From July 16 to July 20, anyone can jump in and enjoy the complete game at no cost. It is the perfect opportunity to explore Redrock for yourself and see everything we have been creating since launch. Once you have completed the main story, ARCADIA, MindsEye’s game-creation tool, opens up an entirely new way to play.”
ARCADIA expands the experience beyond the original campaign with races, wave-based survival activities, and missions produced by the community. These creations include their own score-driven progression systems and leaderboards, giving free-weekend participants an opportunity to examine not only the repaired story mode but also the additional content Build A Rocket Boy has introduced since release.
