Ahead of Mortal Shell II’s August 20 launch, an unexpected shortage has emerged: demand for the PlayStation 5-exclusive physical Revered Edition has far exceeded the publisher’s forecasts. The collector’s package is already unavailable for pre-order in several markets, and fresh stock is unlikely to arrive before release day.
Cold Symmetry’s soulslike action RPG will launch digitally on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. Players can choose between the Standard Edition and the digital Devout Edition, while the disc-based Revered Edition is being produced exclusively for PS5.
According to Playstack, interest in the physical release surpassed expectations. Several retailers have already allocated their entire stock, leaving customers in a growing number of countries unable to place new pre-orders. The publisher has apologised to fans who cannot currently secure a copy.
Manufacturing lead times make a pre-launch restock unlikely
This is not a shortage that can be solved by simply shipping a few more boxes. Producing the discs, packaging and collector’s items takes time, while Mortal Shell II is due on August 20. Playstack therefore says there is only a very small chance of additional Revered Edition units becoming available before launch.
The company is reviewing demand with its distribution partner and exploring whether another production run is possible. For now, however, there is no guarantee of a post-launch restock either, as the final decision does not rest with the publisher alone.
Why the Revered Edition disappeared so quickly
The package is the game’s only physical edition, and it offers considerably more than a standard boxed copy. Alongside the game disc, buyers receive a physical artbook, a Steelcase, fine-art prints and digital extras. Pre-orders also include two exclusive Harbinger skins.
The digital Devout Edition instead adds an Obsidian skin set for all eight playable Shells and grants up to 72 hours of advanced access. The sequel itself promises a freely explorable but deliberately compact interconnected open world, while its combat system removes the traditional stamina restriction to encourage more aggressive tactical options.
The shortage is frustrating news for collectors, but it also sends a clear message to the developers: a significant part of the audience still values carefully produced physical editions. Anyone determined to buy the Revered Edition should watch retailer alerts and Playstack’s future updates, though neither launch-day stock nor a later reprint is currently assured.
