We are hearing about an increasing number of games whose developers cannot meet their originally planned release windows. Tomb Raider: Catalyst may now have joined that list.
According to a recent interview, the release of Tomb Raider: Catalyst appears to have been postponed until 2028. Jeffrey Gattis, the head of Amazon’s gaming division, spoke with The Game Business about the range of games Amazon has funded or published, and whether the company’s strategy primarily focuses on AAA, AA, or independent productions. Gattis replied that the strategy encompasses all of them and provided examples. At one point, he mentioned Tomb Raider: Catalyst and said it would be released in 2028, although this has not yet been officially confirmed.
“It is all of those. From what we call game night games, meaning those phone-as-a-controller titles that I think of as single-A games and that cost several million dollars to develop, all the way to triple-A. We have obviously announced the two Tomb Raider titles as well: Atlantis will be released next year on February 12, and then the next one will arrive in 2028. We are very excited about them. There are also several other triple-A projects currently in various stages of discussion,” Gattis said.
Amazon’s most recent official statement regarding Tomb Raider: Catalyst still schedules the game for release in 2027, meaning Gattis either revealed the delay accidentally or referred to a postponement that has not yet been formally announced. Catalyst will be the 14th main installment in the Tomb Raider series and is being developed by Crystal Dynamics, the studio responsible for the main franchise since 2006’s Tomb Raider: Legend. The game is set in northern India and can be viewed as a sequel to 2008’s Tomb Raider: Underworld.
Before that, Amazon will release Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, a reimagining of the original Tomb Raider developed by Crystal Dynamics and Flying Wild Hog. It will be the second remake of the first game, which originally launched in 1996. Legacy of Atlantis has also suffered a delay. The game was initially announced for 2026, later postponed, and will ultimately be released on February 12.
